Risk of mortality among children, adolescents, and adults with autism spectrum disorder or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and their first-degree relatives: a protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies

Abstract: BackgroundAutism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are childhood onset neurodevelopmental disorders that may persist into adulthood. ASD and ADHD tend to run in families and may have a significant negative impact on the health and longevity of those with the disorder and their relatives. The aim of this study will be to analyze the risk of mortality among children, adolescents, and adults with ASD or ADHD and their first-degree relatives.Methods/designWe will conduct a… Show more

“…Research from Denmark, in 2015, showed that people with ADHD have significantly higher mortality (estimated to be two times higher) with an overall shorter life expectancy (Dalsgaard et al ). This finding was also observed in a meta‐analysis by Catalá‐López, that found a significant adverse health and longevity effect in both autism spectrum disorder and ADHD (Catala‐Lopez et al ). DβH has been widely implicated in ADHD with increased risk, reduced life, and altered pharmacological efficacy (Fang et al ; Tong et al ; Barkley et al ).…”

“…ASD is among the top ten causes of disability worldwide in children between 5 and 9 years old [8], these findings could be partially explained by the link between ASD and other lifetime health problems, including epilepsy, diabetes, cardiovascular and gastrointestinal diseases, cancer, depression, and suicide [812]. A better understanding of these lifetime co-occurring conditions is important for people with ASD, their families and caregivers, clinicians and other healthcare professionals, scientists, and policy makers [13, 14]. Recognizing this multimorbidity scenario, we focus our attention on the relationships between ASD and cancer for two reasons.…”

“…A key challenge is that based on knowledge from previous systematic reviews on mental health [1924, 56, 57], we anticipate identifying epidemiological studies with different features, populations, and contexts and with a variable quality of reporting methods and results. This study will identify knowledge gaps to be filled by new research.…”
