Risk of Kaposi sarcoma after solid organ transplantation in the United States

Abstract: Due to treatment with immunosuppressive medications, solid organ transplant recipients have elevated risk for Kaposi sarcoma (KS), which is caused by human herpesvirus 8 (HHV8). Other risk factors for KS are poorly understood. We linked the United States solid organ transplant registry with 17 population-based cancer registries to ascertain KS incidence among 244,964 transplant recipients from 1987-2014. To compare incidence rates of KS according to patient and transplant characteristics, we calculated inciden… Show more

“…There are few reported cases of pediatric PTKS, possibly because pediatric patients are less likely than adults to have been previously infected with HHV‐8 at the time of transplant. Indeed, risk of PTKS is associated with older age at the time of transplant . Our search of the literature revealed 8 studies of a total of 25 pediatric cases of PTKS .…”

“…Indeed, risk of PTKS is associated with older age at the time of transplant. 2 Our search of the literature revealed 8 studies of a total of 25 pediatric cases of PTKS. 5,[10][11][12][13][14][15][16] As was seen in our patient, many prior patients who have been described presented earlier after transplant than the adult median, and pediatric patients more commonly had visceral involvement than purely cutaneous disease.…”
