Risk of Dementia in Patients with Depression or Parkinson’s Disease: A Retrospective Cohort Study

Abstract: Background. This study aimed to clarify whether Parkinson’s disease (PD) and depression were independent risk factors or with synergic effects in dementia. Methods. Newly diagnosed PD (n = 1213) patients and control subjects (n = 4852) were selected from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database from January 2001 through December 2008. Follow-up ended in 2011 with an outcome of dementia occurring or not. This cohort was divided into controls with or without depression, PD only, and PD with depress… Show more

“…PD, which occurs especially in the elderly, is a chronic disorder involving neurodegenerative changes that lead to the deprivation of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra and a subsequent reduction of dopamine level in the striatum, resulting in tremor, myotonia and dyskinesia (Shen et al ., 2021). In the clinical, PD is often associated with multiple complications such as sleep disorders, depression and LUTS (Airavaara et al ., 2020; Fang et al ., 2020; Martinez-Ramirez et al ., 2020). These morbid complications usually indicated an increased likelihood of hospitalization, polypharmacy, adverse drug effects including the anticholinergic burden of medications, drug–disease and drug–drug interactions (Tenison and Henderson, 2020).…”

“…To increase our diagnostic validity, the subjects were included only when the diagnosis was made in three or more consecutive outpatient visits or in one or more inpatient settings during follow-up in 1996-2011. Similar to our previous researches (22,23), we excluded patients encoded with the diseases possibly causing secondary parkinsonism (for example: stroke, hydrocephalus, hypoxic encephalopathy. .…”
