Risk of Cardiovascular Disease Associated with a Restless Legs Syndrome Diagnosis in a Retrospective Cohort Study from Kaiser Permanente Northern California

Abstract: Primary restless legs syndrome (RLS) was not associated with new-onset cardiovascular disease (CVD) or coronary artery disease (CAD) but was associated with a slight increased risk of hypertension. In contrast, secondary RLS was associated with an increased risk of CVD, CAD, and hypertension.

“…RLS has been associated with hypertension (HTN), coronary vascular diseases (CVD), insomnia (initiation and maintenance insomnia), depression and fatigability [9,10]. Insomnia has been related to HTN, fatigability, depression and poor performance in work [11].…”

“…These results suggest that the increased risk of CVD in secondary RLS is due to the underlying comorbidities but not RLS independently. 2 Another study of 5,000 women found an association of RLS with self-reported comorbid heart disease (aOR =2.13; 95%CI, 1.18-3.86). 24 On the other hand, Koo et al found only a weak association of PLM arousal index ≥5/h with all-cause CVD (HR =1.26; 95%CI, 1.01-1.57; P trend 0.0402) but not with CAD or CHD specifically.…”

“…2 Other reported conditions where RLS occurs more frequently include narcolepsy, OSA, PD, MS, rheumatoid arthritis, and other conditions. 2,9 CKD and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) are well known to be associated with CVD. The prevalence of RLS in ESRD varies greatly according to different studies and regions.…”
