Guayusa (Ilex guayusa Loes.) is a herbal tea that has been consumed for centuries as a traditional food in western Amazon regions where it is now valued as an antioxidant and a stimulant agent. Currently there is intense commercial activity to expand the consumption of guayusa as a healthy energy drink in Europe, where it is classified by law as a novel food. European Union novel food legislation permits traditional foods to be placed on the market if a history of safe use in a non-EU country can be established. However, a scientific assessment of the 'safe' use of guayusa is lacking. This study investigates the safety of guayusa consumption, analysing provincial hospital admissions data; national disease register data; national toxicology agency call centre data; and national food safety authority data. In doing so we present a crucial analysis for the novel food premarket risk assessment of dried guayusa leaves, based on the well-established use of this traditional food in Ecuador. Within a three-year period there was one minor adverse effect reported nationally, related to the stimulant properties of guayusa. However, there were no hospital presentations, no product safety notifications and no disease register records of guayusarelated illness. Comprehensive records of unrelated food safety risks demonstrate that Ecuador's surveillance and reporting system has sufficient rigour to identify risks should they exist. We conclude that there is a history of safe use of guayusa in Ecuador. Establishing safe guayusa consumption is an important milestone for the authorisation of dried guayusa leaves as a novel food with claimed health benefits in Europe. Consequently, this study has significance for international product development of guayusa as an antioxidant energy drink.

Wheat and cereals generally are largely consumed worldwide and contribute significantly to antioxidant intake with beneficial health effects. In the precise two-year field experiments, two varieties of wheat einkorn, two varieties of emmer wheat and three varieties of spring wheat in 2008 and moreover further two spring wheat varieties, three einkorn varieties and three emmer wheat varieties in 2009, were evaluated for antioxidant activity (AOA) using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl assay (DPPH). The higher grain AOA was observed in emmer (215.4-257.6 mg Trolox/kg DM) and einkorn (149.8-255.8 mg Trolox/kg DM) varieties, while in spring varieties the AOA ranged between 195.8 and 210.0 mg Trolox/kg DM. A linear correlation between total polyphenols and AOA was determined (r = 0.739, P ≤ 0.05). Emmer and einkorn wheat varieties showed high AOA and can be promising sources of these nutritionally appreciated grain constituents.

Sformułowanie "nowa żywność" pojawiło się w polskim systemie prawnym 23 września 2001 r. wraz z wejściem w życie ustawy o warunkach zdrowotnych żywności i żywienia 1 . W literaturze wskazuje się, że bardziej adekwatnym zwrotem byłaby jednak "żywność nowego rodzaju", ponieważ ta nowość jest właściwie cechą konkretnej kategorii żywności 2 , niespożywanej do tej pory w określonym kręgu społeczno-kulturowym. Przyjęte określenie jest wynikiem tłumaczenia wyrażenia novel food 3 , ______________ 1 Definicja legalna nowej żywności znajdowała się w art. 3 ust. 1 uchylonej już ustawy z 11 maja 2001 r. o warunkach zdrowotnych żywności i żywienia, Dz. U. 2001, Nr 63, poz. 634. Zgodnie z pierwotnym brzmieniem tej ustawy nowa żywność to substancje lub ich mieszaniny, które dotychczas nie były wykorzystywane do żywienia ludzi, w tym środki spożywcze, używki lub ich składniki: a) zawierające lub składające się z genetycznie zmodyfikowanych organizmów albo ich fragmentów, określonych w odrębnych przepisach, b) otrzymane z organizmów, o których mowa w lit. a), ale ich niezawierające, c) o nowej lub celowo zmodyfikowanej podstawowej strukturze molekularnej, d) wyizolowane z mikroorganizmów, grzybów lub wodorostów lub składające się z nich, e) składające się z roślin lub uzyskane z roślin lub ze zwierząt, z wyjątkiem żywności i składników żywności otrzymanych przy zastosowaniu tradycyjnych metod rozmnażania lub hodowli, f) poddane procesowi technologicznemu niestosowanemu dotychczas, powodującemu istotne zmiany ich składu lub struktury, który wpływa na wartość odżywczą, metabolizm i zawartość niepożądanych substancji.
