“…This is even more worrying when data from systematic reviews have indicated that, worldwide, there is a peak of dental caries at 70 years of age [Kassebaum et al, 2015], and an increase in tooth loss with advancing age [Kassebaum et al, 2014]. “…Despite these characteristics, this type of lesion can be controlled through mechanical biofilm removal and the use of fluoridated toothpastes, particularly those with high fluoride concentration, and topical agents containing fluoride [Kidd et al, 2015;Wierichs and Meyer-Lueckel, 2015;. Different factors have also been associated with the presence of root caries in older people, including biological and socioeconomic characteristics, such as the concomitant presence of coronal caries lesions, educational level, income, and location of the municipality [Manji and Fejerskov, 1990;Mamai-Homata et al, 2012;Hayes et al, 2016]. Therefore, considering the foregoing, dental caries is an important public health problem in older people, which is closely linked to social factors [Petersen and Yamamoto, 2005].…”

“…3,23,24 Often a spouse, caregiver, or the patients themselves will not realize when oral hygiene becomes inadequate. 4,20,27 It should be also considered that many of these factors are overlapping for elderly patients, thus further increasing their risk of ROHD as compared to other age groups. 25,26 In addition, many oral conditions more commonly seen among the elderly population can increase patients' risk of ROHD.…”

“…Toothloss becomes more likely if the patient frequently consumes fermentable sugar in their diet and if the root surfaces of the teeth become exposed through recession of the support tissues. Once again, this is more likely over time and may manifest itself in old age, particularly in patients with chronic periodontal disease and those wearing RPDs to replace missing teeth …”

“…Once again, this is more likely over time and may manifest itself in old age, particularly in patients with chronic periodontal disease and those wearing RPDs to replace missing teeth. 25,26 A key component to this preventively orientated approach is a shift from "treating" patients to "caring" for patients. This philosophy includes empowering patients to take charge of some elements of their oral health care with appropriately structured and individually tailored advice.…”
