Risk Factors, Patterns, and Distribution of Bone Metastases and Skeletal-Related Events in High-Risk Breast Cancer Patients

Abstract: Background: More than a quarter of breast cancer patients are at risk to develop recurrent metastases to the bone. Objective: This study was designed to identify risk factors and predilections of bone metastasis and skeletal-related events (SRE) in a population of breast cancer survivors initially diagnosed in advanced stages and with high-risks of relapse. Methods: Associated risk factors, distribution, and attainable treatment of bone metastasis and SRE were analyzed in a cohort of 1,329 breast cancer patien… Show more

“…The frequency of molecular subtypes in our study followed the same order as those of Mighri et al [ 22 ], Al Tamimi et al [ 26 ], and Caldarella et al [ 27 ]. However, these results are inconsistent with some previous studies conducted in Algeria, Egypt, Japan, and the USA [ 28 31 ]. These controversies may be due to different cut-off values set for Ki-67 in the stratification of luminal BCs.…”

“…Bone metastasis was reported as the most common site, followed by metastasis to the skin, liver, lung, and brain. A recent study was performed by Anwar et al on 1,329 females with BC to investigate risk factors, patterns, and distribution of bone metastases and skeletal-related events in high-risk BC patients [ 31 ]. Their findings showed a rate of about 18.5 percent for metastatic BC (higher than ours), but like our results, bones were the most common site of metastasis in their analysis.…”

“…Advanced OSCC patients often need multimodality treatment with more severe impairments in their functioning and quality of life [ 2 ]. In addition, developing countries including Indonesia also experience a shortage of facilities and manpower in cancer treatment and prevention which can add to the health burden [ 26 ] [ 27 ]. Most clinical failures in the OSCC are caused by loco-regional recurrence [ 28 ].…”

“…More than two million women are diagnosed with breast cancer and above 600.000 women lose their lives per year in association with the disease [ 1 ]. Recent advances in breast cancer treatment using multidisciplinary approach have significantly improved pa-tient prognosis [ 2 , 3 ]. Several clinical and pathological parameters have been used to deter-mine breast cancer prognosis including stage at diagnosis, histological grades, intrinsic sub-types, and prerequisite metabolic comorbidities [ 4 , 5 ].…”
