Risk factors of postoperative urinary retention after hip surgery for femoral neck fracture in elderly women

Abstract: The present study showed that the early removal of the urethral catheter, and preoperative dementia and/or delirium had significant correlations with POUR. The femoral neck fractures and the surgical procedure used for the hip surgery do not induce damage to the bladder and nerve system related to the voiding function, and the voiding function in all of the patients recovered after short-term intermittent catheterization. Physicians should not place permanent indwelling urethral catheters without carrying out … Show more

“…The association between a low level of mobility and asymptomatic urinary retention has been demonstrated in the past in elderly women following orthopedic surgery, or a stroke . In the present study, an independent association between a low level of mobility and asymptomatic urinary retention in elderly women upon admission to Internal Medicine departments has been demonstrated for the first time.…”

“…Although outcomes of hip fracture have been reported, the methodological quality of these studies was poor 9,10. Ingemarsson11 and Al-Ani et al12 noted that discharge to rehabilitation units and walking ability were associated with preserved walking ability and ADL in cognitively impaired patients with hip fractures, while Muir and Johannes13 recommended that intensive inpatient rehabilitation after surgical repair of a hip fracture may be able to achieve benefits in physical function for cognitively impaired patients that are comparable with those for cognitively intact patients.…”

“…Following surgery, 21.8% of women had POUR. Icodextrin was associated with significantly more urinary retention (P ¼ 0.017), but did not extend hospital admission significantly [22]. The administration of icodextrin was associated with resection of moderate or severe-stage endometriosis involving multiple surgical sites, whereas women in the nonicodextrin group were more likely to be having a hysterectomy [22].…”

“…POUR is highly prevalent in hip fracture patients, and in female (but not male) patients, it has been found to be predictive of adverse motor functional independence measure gain (P ¼ 0.046) [21]. Possible risk factors of POUR after hip surgery for femoral neck fracture in elderly women may be the indwelling period of the urethral catheter, and preoperative dementia and/or delirium [22].…”
