Risk Factors of Pertussis Among Older Adults in South Korea: A Nationwide Health Data-Based Case–Control Study

Abstract: Introduction: To better understand the conditions associated with pertussis diagnosis among older adults in South Korea, a matched case-control study was conducted of individuals C 50 years diagnosed with pertussis between 2009 and 2018. Methods: Pertussis cases were identified using the nationwide Health Insurance Review and Assessment service (HIRA) database. Each case was then matched to up to 10 controls identified using the National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort (NHIS-NSC) by age, sex, a… Show more

“…However, since PFT may not be readily available in local hospitals, it leads to an excessive diagnosis of asthma even in adult patients because diagnosing asthma does not require PFT according to the policy. Therefore, in a study conducted with the national healthcare database of South Korea, asthma and COPD are often reported as a composite termasthma/COPD (40)(41)(42) because they are hard to distinguish from each other in this unique setting of clinical practice. As the diagnosis of the diseases was operationally defined using diagnostic codes, it could be inaccurate and possibly overestimated.…”

“…In a retrospective cohort study from the UK, the incidence of pertussis among individuals aged ≥50 years with COPD was assessed from Clinical Practice Research Datalink and Hospital Episode Statistics databases during 2009–2018 [ 134 ]. COPD patients had a 2.32-fold higher risk of contracting pertussis resulted in significant increases in healthcare resource utilisation and direct medical costs around the pertussis event [ 134 , 135 ]. New and immunologically improved vaccines will be expected in the next few years.…”
