Risk factors of Neospora caninum infection in dogs and cats in dairy farms in Western Thailand

Abstract: The objectives of this study were to investigate the risk factors of Neospora caninum infection in dogs and cats found in dairy herds in western Thailand. A case-control study was conducted in dairy herds in three western provinces including Nakhon Pathom, Ratchaburi and Kanchanaburi. Blood samples of pets from 14 positive dairy herds and 26 herds from negative neighbouring farms which were randomly selected, in total blood samples from dogs and cats from 40 herds were collected and examined for antibodies aga… Show more

“…In this present study, most farms had at least one dog in nearby environment. Hence, the presence of dogs on a farm has been a potential risk to provide the increasing chance of horizontal transmission (Jittapalapong et al 2008;Arunvipas et al 2012b). …”

“…The same methods cELISA and/or IFAT were used also in Brazil; N. caninum antibodies were found in 25% of 400 (Bresciani et al 2007) and in none of 70 (Coelho et al 2011) cats, respectively. In Thailand, 36 tested cats were negative for N. caninum antibodies in both IFAT and cELISA (Arunvipas et al 2011).…”

“…Dogs, especially farm dogs, are an important factor in the spread of N. caninum infection. They can become infected by ingesting tissues such as livers, lungs, and brains, as well as aborted foetuses and placental material from infected cattle [ 32 ]. Following infection, N. caninum oocysts are shed in their faeces which contaminate water, pasture, and the environment of cattle farms.…”

“…In Thailand, the seroprevalence of bovine neosporosis in dairy cattle farms ranges from 3 to 47% depending on the type of serological test and cut-off level used, and the areas surveyed [ 32 , 42 44 ]. Few studies have reported the presence of N. caninum in dogs, although 1.2% of dogs near farms in Nakhon Pathom Province were shown to be N. caninum- positive by competitive ELISA [ 42 ].…”
