aims:
to evaluate the effect of ESWT by MMP-3 examination.
background:
Current treatment knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is how to inhibit the degenerative processes of osteoarthritis by regenerative medicine. One of physical modalities that have regenerative effect is extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT). By evaluation of matrix metalloproteinase-3 (MMP-3) as one of degenerative enzyme for cartilage degradation still lack evidences, especially after shock wave management.
objective:
this pre-experimental study aims to know the effect of ESWT by serial evaluation of MMP-3, and pain as addition clinical data.
method:
We recruited 14 participants with KOA grade 2 and 3 by Kellgren Lawrence classification. ESWT piezo shockwave was used once a week for six weeks. Three times MMP-3 evaluation (pre test, mid test after 3 weeks and post test one week after last session) were obtained by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. We evaluate pain scale using Wong Becker Face Scale.
result:
Median of MMP-3 pre test was 19,92 ng/mL, mid test was 15,89 ng/mL, and post test was 18,82 ng/mL. There were significantly difference of MMP-3 pre test and mid test also pre test and post test, p < 0,05. Pain scale also decreasing over the time significantly.
conclusion:
MMP-3 was decreased significantly after ESWT treatment for KOA, especially after 3 weeks. It perhaps to be the effective treatment time of ESWT in KOA.
other:
The ESWT can inhibit the degenerative processes
