Risk Factors for Suicidal Ideation of the General Population

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate risk factors of suicide ideation in general population. A total of 1,116 adults were sampled with randomization in an urban area. After excluding 116 participants due to incomplete answer, 1,000 participants (500 males; mean age 39.6 ± 11.6) completed self-report questionnaire including the Center for Epidemiologic Study Depression Scale (CES-D), the Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation (BSI), the Spielberger State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory (STAXI), the Barratt Impuls… Show more

“…In a path analysis of elderly subjects, depressive symptoms had the strongest influence on suicidal ideation and suicide attempts (27). In addition, both major and minor depression disorders are significant predictors of suicide in the old elderly (28) and depressive mood is independently associated with suicidal ideation in the general population (29).…”

“…In the general population, suicidal ideation is related with psychiatric illness and depressive mood (Bae, Lee, Cho, Kim, Im, & Cho, 2013) and several empirical studies linked depression, anxiety, and hostility with suicidal ideation (e.g., Campos, Besser, & Blatt, 2012, 2013Goldblatt, 2008;Lamis et al, 2010;Nepon, Belik, Bolton, & Sareen, 2010;Youssef et al, 2004).…”

“…There seems to be a nadir around 8-9 hours of sleep per night, depending on the population under study. Some studies suggest that above a certain number of hours of sleep (>8 hours [21], ≥9 hours [17], or ≥10 hours [41]) the risk for suicidal behaviour is also increased, although to a lesser extent than with short sleep duration or becoming non-significant after adjustment for some factors. The study conducted by Winsler et al [28], which evaluated sleep duration continuously, further suggests that even within a range of sleep time usually considered normal, having just 1 hour less of sleep (e.g.…”

“…Bae et al [41] considered shorter and longer than normal sleep duration in the same category, named "abnormal sleep duration" (≤5 or ≥10 hours of sleep). In a linear regression analysis, suicidal ideation was significantly related to abnormal sleep duration, although after controlling for age and gender the correlation was not significant.…”
