Risk factors for severe complications of the novel influenza A (H1N1): analysis of patients hospitalized in Italy

Abstract: Eighty-one patients affected by the novel influenza A (H1N1), hospitalized in North-western Italy, were studied. The median age was 32 years (range 1-81 years). Fifty-six (69%) had an underlying medical condition, including lung disorders (asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) in 34% and obesity in 25%. Fifty percent of them had pneumonia, 12% were admitted to the intensive care unit and 3% died. Antiviral treatment was initiated in 75% of patients started within 48 h. Older age and lung and neuroco… Show more

“…However, few studies analyzed the epidemiology of pandemic influenza A (H1N1) virus in Italy, and most of them were retrospective or focused only on hospitalized patients [Bassetti et al, 2011]. In the present study, the circulation of pandemic influenza A (H1N1) virus in the adult population during the 2009-2010 respiratory season in Italy was evaluated prospectively through an active surveillance performed at an Emergency Department of a reference hospital.…”

“…Studies on the clinical spectrum of pandemic influenza A (H1N1) virus infection focused mainly on hospitalized patients affected by severe complications, sometimes requiring intensive care unit admission [Cao et al, 2009;Dawood et al, 2009;Domínguez-Cherit et al, 2009;Donaldson et al, 2009;Louie et al, 2009;Bassetti et al, 2011]. Little is known about the incidence of pandemic influenza A (H1N1) virus infection in patients seeking medical care for respiratory disease regardless of its severity.…”

“…(24) Although secondary outcomes, such as the frequency of mechanical ventilation requirement and length of hospital stay, were similar to influenza A (H1N1) infection who were admitted to four infectious disease facilities in Liguria. (30) That study included 81 patients, of whom 50% had pneumonia, 12% were admitted to ICU, and 3% died. The authors found that respiratory and neurocognitive impairment was associated with severe disease and death.…”
