Risk Factors for Outbreaks of Multidrug-Resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae in Critical Burn Patients

Abstract: The objective of this study is to identify the risk factors related to colonization or infection in an outbreak of multidrug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae in a burn patient unit. The authors studied the risk factors associated with colonization or infection using a case-control study design involving patients with multidrug resistant K. pneumoniae (n = 26) and controls (n = 50). They describe the outbreak and provide a retrospective analysis that encompasses patient demographics, microbiological isolation, c… Show more

“…Cells in plugs were digested with lysozyme and proteinase K. After washing the plugs, genomic DNA was digested with 20 U of XbaI restriction endonuclease (Thermo Scientific-Fermantas Corporation, Vilnius, Lithuania). DNA fragments were separated using a CHEF-DR II system (Bio-Rad Laboratories, Nazareth, Belgium) at 14°C with 6 Volt/cm 2 …”

“…Factors, such as mechanical ventilation, sedatives-analgesics or surgery, may influence hemodynamic changes, but are inevitable confounders in this clinical setting. Data on length of stay and overall mortality are not particularly valuable, because they are affected by other conditions, such as an outbreak of multiresistant Klebsiella [36]. …”

“…Although there have been several studies highlighting and investigating Klebsiella liver abscesses and resulting complications, an understudied yet severely affected population consists of burn injury patients [19]. Infection is a common cause of death in these patients [20].…”
