Risk factors for male patients with gonorrhoea complicated by inflammation of the paraurethral glands around the external urethral orifice

Abstract: Gonococcal inflammation of paraurethral glands around the external urethral orifice is a local complication of gonorrhoea in men. To investigate the risk factors for this complication we compared prepuce factors, Chlamydia trachomatis infection, demographic data and behavioural indicators of gonorrhoeal patients with and without this complication. Results showed that a prolonged disease course of gonorrhoea, sexual intercourse during gonorrhoea, repeated squeezing of the penis and a redundant prepuce were risk… Show more

“…2 Neisseria gonorrhoeae can invade the paraurethral ducts through their openings, causing gonococcal inflammation of the paraurethral glands. [3][4][5][6] To determine the morphologic characteristics of inflamed paraurethral glands in men with gonococcal infection, we used an ultrasound system (ACUSON 9300 â , Siemens, Erlangen, Germany) with a probe frequency of 7.5-10 MHz to examine 32 men (aged 17-65 years, mean 34.6 years) with gonococcal inflammation of the paraurethral glands between February 2007 and February 2014.…”

“…The paraurethral ducts appear to be embryological remnants and are not visible to the naked eye ( Gilhooly & Hensle, 1984 ). Neisseria gonorrhoeae can invade the paraurethral duct via its orifice, resulting in gonococcal inflammation of the paraurethral duct ( Fan, 2010 ; Fan, & Zhang, 2012 ; Fan, Zhang, & Fan, 2012 ; Fan, Zhang, & Jiang, 2014 ; Sherrard, 2014 ). The inflammation clinically manifests as local erythematous swelling at the external urethral orifice, with a pinhead-like ostium at the center indicating the orifice of the paraurethral duct.…”
