“…In a pilot case-control study of conservatively managed breast cancer patients, Haffty et al (1996) observed that patients who sustained a local relapse were more likely to overexpress HER-2/Neu. A similar trend was noted in conservatively treated patients in a study by Elkhuizen et al (1999), although the difference did not reach statistical significance. More recently, in a cohort of patients treated with radiation for postmastectomy chest wall relapses, we have observed a higher rate of chest wall progression in patients overexpressing HER-2/neu (Pentopoulos et al, 2002).…”

“…In a case control study of locally recurrent breast cancer patients and a matched group of locally controlled patients, Turner et al (2000a) observed a higher rate of overexpression of P53 in the locally recurrent cohort. A similar study reported by Elkhuizen et al (1999), however, failed to show a correlation between P53 expression and local control in conservatively managed breast cancer patients. Silvestrini et al (1997b) also did not show a correlation with local relapse following conservative surgery and radiation.…”
