Risk factors for internal anal sphincter dysfunction in Japanese adults

Abstract: Purpose: The internal anal sphincter provides most of the resting anal tone and is the main muscle responseble for continence. This study was designed to estimate the prevalence of, and identify risk factors associated with, internal anal sphincter dysfunction in Japanese adults. Methods: Anorectal manometry was performed in 1193 women and 1124 men aged 20 years or older. The maximal resting pressure, measured by a rapid pull-through technique, was defined as the highest resting pressure recorded. Internal ana… Show more

“…Surgical repair for sphincter defects by direct apposition or overlap techniques has been associated with excellent or good short-term results in up to 85% of patients; however, the benefits deteriorate with long-term follow-up [19]. In elderly individuals, sphincter degeneration progresses with age [20]; therefore, the success rates tend to decrease over time after surgery. In this regard, the Thiersch procedure, wherein the sphincter muscle is supported with a prosthesis, would be a more durable repair for elderly patients with a patulous anus.…”

“…Hasil nilai FISI pada masing-masing tingkat keparahan hipertensi mengungkapkan bahwa nilai FISI pada tekanan darah normal dan hipertensi tingkat 1 tidak berbeda secara signifikan, tetapi nilai FISI pada kelompok hipertensi tingkat 2 dan 3 sangat jauh berbeda dengan 2 kelompok lainnya (Tabel 3). (Abe, Kono, Hachiro, Kunimoto, & Furukawa, 2013).…”
