Abstract: We recommended that investigators focus on developing and evaluating preparticipation screening and groin injury prevention programmes through high-quality randomised controlled trials targeting athletes at greater risk of injury.

“…Given the ‘fear and avoidance’ culture prevalent in dance, that few preprofessional dancers seek medical attention for fear of having to discontinue,5 53 54 it is highly likely that dancers do not fully recover from their initial injury. In sport, inadequate rehabilitation from an initial injury is also suggested as a mechanism behind previous injury as a risk factor 24. While having a previous injury may not be modifiable, the importance of rehabilitation from an incurred injury, prior to returning to full dance training may be a key ingredient in the education and subsequent injury prevention of young dancers.…”

“…The 2009 model of the OCEBM was chosen over the 2011 model as it more clearly demonstrated the distribution of the current dance science literature with regard to the hierarchy of evidence. It has also been used in a previous systematic review on risk factors for groin injury in sport 24. To accommodate the high quantity of cross-sectional studies identified, the 2009 OCEBM model was modified such that level 3 included cross-sectional study designs.…”

“…Question 4, 8, 14, 19, 23, 24 and 27 were not applicable to prospective study designs, and were therefore excluded. This was based on the recommendations of a previous systemic review investigating risk factors using prospective study designs 31. The modified checklist had a maximum score of 20.…”

“…One example is that after an ankle sprain, the reinjury rate is about 50% during the first 6 months after return to play, but only 4% after 2 years, the same as for healthy ankles 23. Another study shows that graft ruptures after ACL surgery also tend to occur within the first 6 months 25. The explanation is probably that, with time, injured ligaments and muscles heal and their functional properties (strength, balance, neuromuscular control) improve.…”
