Risk Factors For Gestational Diabetes – An Update

Abstract: Women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) have an increased lifetime risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). GDM has a substantial impact on maternal and foetal short and long-term health. Risk factors for GDM may be genetic or nongenetic and have been analysed in numerous studies. Researches in recent years allowed the identification of other risk factors for GDM except for those already known.Knowledge and identification of all risk factors for GDM allows the elaboration of a prevention stra… Show more

“…To date, several risk factors have been identified for GDM such as family history of GDM or T2DM, previous stillbirth, maternal age over 30-35 years, obesity, insulin resistance, maternal metabolic syndrome, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, vitamin D deficiency, and polycystic ovary disease. 14,15 It is well documented that mothers with GDM are at higher risk of gestational hypertension, cesarean delivery, and preeclampsia. 16,17 GDM is thought to occur as a result of an autoimmune process, a condition of persistent insulin resistance, or a genetic predisposition to abnormal insulin secretion.…”

“…Various studies conducted highlighted that advanced maternal age was mostly associated with an increased likelihood of developing GDM. Women above age of 30 years are at increased risk of GDM [12,13]. Although GDM can be asymptomatic, it is associated with increased risk of complications associated with pregnancy and childbirth.…”

“…Dietary behaviours, such as high intake of sugarsweetened beverages, fried foods and animal fat before or/and during pregnancy, had been linked to GDM (18)(19)(20) . A high amount of sugar had been directly linked to impaired pancreatic beta cell function in humans (21) .…”
