Risk factors for 30‐day soft tissue complications after pelvic sarcoma surgery: A National Surgical Quality Improvement Program study

Abstract: Introduction Soft tissue (ST) complications after resection of bone and ST sarcomas of the pelvis occur more frequently than in appendicular tumors. We sought to identify risk factors for complications within 30 days of surgery. Methods The National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database was used for this study. Patients with sarcomas of bone and ST of the pelvis were retrieved using Current Procedural Terminology and International Classification of Diseases codes. Outcomes assessed were ST complication… Show more

“…711 However, studies investigating flap reconstruction in particular have described comparable functional and clinical outcomes in patients with high grade and recurrent tumors compared with lower grade and primary tumors reconstructed with less complex reconstructive techniques. 1217 Ultimately, these findings emphasize the importance of optimizing closure with robust and well-vascularized soft tissue in limb salvage procedures.…”

“…Pelvic tumor surgical procedures are fraught with complications, and recent literature has provided insight into potential risk factors. Gonzalez et al focused on the 30-day soft-tissue complications following the resection of bone and soft-tissue sarcomas of the pelvis 17 . Older age, hematocrit of <30%, and longer operative time were identified as risk factors for postoperative soft-tissue complications.…”
