Risk factors associated with urinary albumin excretion in African Americans

Abstract: Microalbuminuria is considered a marker of heightened risk for cardiovascular events. We examined cardiovascular risk factors, including inflammatory cytokines, which contribute to urinary albumin excretion (UAE) in a cross-sectional study of African Americans aged 18-49 years. Measurements included a timed overnight urine collection for UAE, blood pressure (BP), body mass index, glucose, lipids, insulin and inflammatory cytokines. Non-normally distributed variables were log transformed for analysis using mult… Show more

“…In studies investigating the association of MA with glucose levels, there were conflicting results (22,37,38). Like some of these studies, we were not able to demonstrate any correlation between fasting or postprandial glucose levels and MA in a hypertensive group.…”

“…Plasma adiponectin levels in this study seem to be somewhat higher than adiponectin levels measured in more recent studies in our laboratory on African American participants 48. Since the samples used in this study were stored for several years there is a possibility that some evaporation of the samples could have occurred.…”

“…The association of hypertension and DM with elevated levels of MAU has been well established. 21,27,35 Several studies suggest that inflammation, insulin resistance, systemic endothelial dysfunction, increased vessel wall permeability, and leakage of lipoproteins and MAU could accelerate atherosclerosis, and disturbances in coagulation may account for the association, 8,32,36,37 but it has not yet been confirmed. These mechanisms might explain the higher MAU in individuals with DM or hypertension.…”
