Background. Preterm birth is the leading cause of neonatal mortality and significant health consequences to the newborn, families, and communities and tens of emotional and economic costs. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the magnitude of singleton preterm birth and associated factors in Shire Suhul General Hospital, Northern Ethiopia. Methods. Institutional based cross-sectional study was conducted among systematically selected 325 postnatal mothers in Shire Suhul General Hospital, Northern Ethiopia, from January to March 2018. The data were collected through both face-to-face interview and chart review by using pretested semistructured questionnaires. SPSS version 20 was employed to enter and analyze the data. Both bivariate and multivariate logistic regression models were run to identify factors associated with singleton preterm birth at the level of P values ≤ 0.25 and <0.05 for each model, respectively. Result. The magnitude of singleton preterm birth in Suhul Hospital was 16.9%. Smoking cigarette/drinking alcohol during pregnancy [AOR=3.61: CI 95%; 1.59-8.23], previous abortion [AOR=2.37: CI 95%; 1.15-4.88], hemoglobin level < 11gm/dl [AOR=2.44: CI 95%; 1.14-5.22], visible physical neonatal congenital anomaly [AOR=10.42: CI 95%; 1.66-65.23] , and history of giving low birth weight baby [AOR: 2.78 CI 95%; 1.39-5.55] were the factors statistically associated with singleton preterm birth. Conclusion. The magnitude of preterm birth in this study was higher than the average prevalence of preterm birth reported in Ethiopia. Smoking cigarette/drinking alcohol during pregnancy, mothers who had previous abortion, low maternal hemoglobin level, presence of visible physical congenital anomalies of newborn baby, and history of bearing low birth weight baby were found to have statistically significant association with singleton preterm birth. Supplement of daily iron with folic acid (folic acid ideally before pregnancy) for all pregnant mothers with good adherence monitoring and giving attention to preconceptional health care service to avoid any cigarette smoking/alcohol drinking and risk detection were set as recommendations.

Persalinan preterm dini dan lanjut masih menjadi penyebab penting morbiditas dan mortalitas perinatal. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui karakteristik pasien, menganalisis hubungan faktor risiko demografi dan klinik dengan persalinan spontan preterm dini dan preterm lanjut periode Januari 2015-Desember 2016. Metode: Penelitian secara potong lintang retrospektif dilaksanakan pada bulan April-Juni 2017 dengan sumber data rekam medis Rumah Sakit Hasan Sadikin. Hasil: penelitian menunjukan insidensi persalinan preterm adalah 38,54%. Terdapat hubungan signifikan dari faktor risiko pendidikan, jumlah perawatan antenatal, riwayat persalinan preterm, dan ketuban pecah dini terhadap kejadian persalinan spontan preterm dini dan preterm lanjut. Pendidikan SD meningkatkan kejadian persalinan preterm dini 2,3 kali, perawatan antenatal kurang dari 4 kali selama kehamilan meningkatkan kejadian persalinan preterm dini 1,6 kali, riwayat persalinan preterm sebelumnya meningkatkan kejadian persalinan preterm dini 1,9 kali. Ketuban pecah dini meningkatkan kejadian persalinan preterm lanjut 2,6 kali (p<0,05). Kesimpulan: Terdapat hubungan antara tingkat pendidikan, jumlah perawatan antenatal, riwayat persalinan preterm, dan ketuban pecah dini, dengan persalinan spontan preterm dini dan preterm lanjut. Background: High-risk age for pregnant women is < 20 or > 35 years, the possibility of a bad pregnancy/ complications will increase, such as preterm labor. Premature birth is the main cause in almost 2/3 of births. Preterm labor is a labor that occurs in pregnancy between 28 -37 weeks. The incidence in BPM Bidan Nanik Suwati, Pungging Village, Mojosari Sub-District, which is from 80 women giving birth, found 7 respondents experienced preterm labor including 4 (57.14%) aged < 20 and > 35 years and 3 (42.86%) aged 20 -30 years. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the correlation between pregnant women's high-risk age with the preterm of labor in Bidan Praktik Mandiri (BPM) Bidan Nanik Suwati, Amd. Keb, Pungging Village, Mojosari Sub-District, Mojokerto District. Method: The research method used is analytic correlation with a case control approach using research instruments in the form of secondary data. The sample technique used in this study was total sampling, so the sample of the study was all pregnant women of high-risk age in BPM Nanik Suwati, Pungging Village, Mojosari Sub-District at 68 respondents. The results of data collection were processed by chisquare statistical test (X 2 ) with a significance distance of α = 0.05. Results: From the results of the study, almost half (31%) of respondents experienced preterm labor and most (69%) of respondents experienced term delivery. Shows a significant relationship between the age of high-risk pregnant women with the incidence of preterm labor with a value of P = 0.036. Conclusion: The factors that influence preterm labor, such as parity, frequency of ANC patients, and obstetric complications. Therefore, it should be recommended for mothers as much as possible not to become pregnant at a high-risk age, namely age < 20 and > 35 years.
