Kucing adalah inang definitif untuk beberapa infeksi protozoa saluran pencernaan. Kejadian infeksi protozoa saluran pencernaan masih menjadi kategori penyakit terabaikan pada hewan maupun manusia. Penyakit ini perlu diperhatikan karena penyebarannya pada kucing terjadi secara masif dan beberapa diantaranya zoonosis. Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis data penyakit protozoa saluran pencernaan pada pasien kucing di Klinik Rvet Bogor dan membandingkan tingkat infeksi penyakit tersebut dengan curah hujan. Pengambilan data dilakukan dengan merekap rekam medik di Klinik Rvet Bogor pada September 2020–September 2021. Selain itu, data curah hujan diperoleh dari Stasiun Meterologi Citeko, Bogor. Seluruh data rekam medik infeksi protozoa saluran pencernaan pada kucing di klinik tersebut berjumlah 74 kasus, yang terdiri atas 48 kasus Giardia sp., 6 kasus Toxoplasma sp., 11 kasus Entamoeba sp., dan 9 kasus Isospora sp. Tingkat kejadian tertinggi terjadi pada kasus Giardia sp. sebesar 64,86%. Cuaca merupakan salah satu faktor penting dalam transmisi infeksi protozoa saluran pencernaan pada kucing. Bulan tertinggi infeksi protozoa saluran pencernaan terjadi pada November–Desember 2020, Maret 2021, dan Mei 2021 dengan curah hujan menengah. Pencegahan dapat dilakukan dengan cara meningkatkan sanitasi dan higienitas oleh kucing maupun pemilik hewan.

Background Dipilidiosis is a parasitic disease caused by the tapeworm Dipylidium caninum. Fleas and, less frequently, lice act as an intermediate host, and their ingestion is required for infection to occur. While the disease mainly affects domestic and wild carnivores, it is also considered a zoonotic disease, with most human cases reported in children. Dipylidium caninum is considered to be the most common tapeworm infesting companion animals, but dipilidosis in humans is rare. The aims of this review were to improve current understanding of the epidemiology of this parasitosis and its management by the medical and veterinary community. Methods A comprehensive review of the published literature during the last 21 years (2000–2021) on the epidemiology, clinical features, diagnosis, treatment and prevention measures of D. caninum infection and dipilidiosis in companion animals and humans was conducted. Results Using predefined eligibility criteria for a search of the published literature, we retrieved and screened 280 publications. Of these, 161 (141 epidemiological studies, 20 case reports [16 human cases]) were considered for inclusion in this review. This parasitosis is present worldwide; however, despite being the most frequent cestode infection in animals, it is often underdiagnosed using common coprological techniques. Its diagnosis in humans has also proved challenging, being frequently confused with pinworm infection, leading to inappropriate treatment and to the persistence of the disease over time. Prevention measures include control of ectoparasites in animals and the environment, as well as regular deworming of animals, most commonly with praziquantel. Conclusions The diagnosis of dipilidiosis remains challenging in both animals and humans, primarily due to the low sensitivity of the diagnostic methods currently available and a lack of knowledge of the morphological characteristics of the parasite. Although treatment with the appropriate anti-cestode compounds is well tolerated and results in resolution of the infection, indiscriminate use of these compounds may predispose to an increase in resistance. Given the worldwide distribution of this parasite, it is essential to act on several fronts, with a focus on health education for children and animal owners and the control of intermediate hosts, both in animals and in the surrounding environment. Pet Ownership in Aotearoa New Zealand: A National Survey of Cat and Dog Owner Practices

This study used an online survey distributed between January and March 2019 to adults residing in Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ) to investigate cat and dog owner practices. Of the 2385 respondents, 885 (37%) owned both cat/s and dog/s, while 652 (28%) and 609 (26%) owned cat/s only or dog/s only, respectively. Nine percent of respondents (n = 212) did not own a cat or dog when the survey was administered. Gaps were identified in the practices of NZ pet owners with regard to regular grooming, immunizations, and deworming treatments. It was also found that many pets, especially cats, were allowed to wander freely both inside and outside the house. Collectively, these gaps in practice raise parasitology and infection concerns which may impact negatively on animal welfare and may increase the prevalence of zoonotic diseases. This study also revealed the need to improve desexing practices, particularly in dogs. Respondents in the survey expressed the wish to have pets regardless of the financial strain they may impose, indicating that future research should focus on reducing the financial burden of pet ownership along with promoting positive pet ownership practices. Our findings suggest the need for better education resources about pet ownership which are easily accessible and target diverse populations. The findings of this study will aid in developing appropriate educational resources to promote animal welfare and increase pet-related knowledge among the NZ populace.
