Risk factor management in diabetic and non-diabetic patients with coronary heart disease. Findings from the EUROASPIRE I AND II surveys

Abstract: Aims/hypothesis. We examined risk factor management in diabetic and non-diabetic patients with CHD based on data from EUROASPIRE surveys. Methods. Consecutive CHD patients aged 70 years or younger were interviewed and examined at least 6 months after hospitalisation for a revascularisation procedure or acute myocardial infarction or ischaemia. Of these patients, 3569 were from the EUROASPIRE I study, undertaken from 1995 to 1996 in nine countries, and 5556 were from the EUROASPIRE II study, conducted between 1… Show more

“…Today ϳ50% of type 2 diabetic patients use statins, which are known to prevent CHD events effectively (33,34). It would be interesting to study whether low serum zinc level also predicts CHD events in the statin era.…”

“…In the NCEP Evaluation Project Utilizing Novel E-Technology (NEPTUNE) II, a US national survey undertaken in 2003, achievement of NCEP ATP III LDL cholesterol success in patients with diabetes and no CHD was 55%, compared with 62% in patients with CHD and no diabetes, indicating that diabetes was being undertreated as a CHD risk equivalent 23 . The earlier EUROASPIRE II study, conducted in 1999-2000, reported lower attainment of LDL cholesterol 597 mg/dl (2.5 mmol/l) in patients with CHD and no diabetes, compared with patients who had both diabetes and CHD (21% vs. 25%) 24 .…”

“…Importantly, only 12% of our study patients were known as diabetics while an elevated HbA 1c level was detected in another 16% of patients who were not known with diabetes. These findings underscore again the importance of active screening for diabetes which is a strong risk factor for a worse clinical outcome in patients with CAD [21].…”
