Risk assessment: methods on purpose?

Abstract: When considering three proven methods of risk assessment widely used within energy sector, PHA, FMEA and HAZOP, the question of the adequacy of the method to objectives is raised. After introducing the methodological framework for risk assessment, we take a look at an overview of the three methods. From a perspective shaped by systemic paradigm, we propose the concept of symptom, as thread running through of each method. After detailing the specific symptoms for each method, we put forward two hypotheses. Firs… Show more

“…more than 800) that can be implemented (Everdij & Blom, 2008;. The different methods can be grouped into families according to a typology that depends on the implicit choices used to describe the system that we want to study (Foussard & Denis-Rémis, 2014). Nevertheless, these methods are all based on a similar conceptualization of risk (Renn, 1992).…”

“…The houses in Msimbati, Mtandi, Namindondi, and Mngoji villages were chosen based on their closeness to the gas extraction processing plant and gas fields. To determine all the parameters, the International Oil and Gas Companies (IOC) built the distance cut-off points based on Hazop or the operability of the ground or the plant [ 72 ]. This investigation used a multi-stage sampling method, with several phases leading up to stratified proportionate sampling.…”
