In contrast with phthalate esters (PAEs), many non-PAE plasticizers (NPPs) remain poorly characterized in their environmental distribution. Our work explored the spatial distributions of 44 NPPs in airborne fine particles (PM2.5) from 13 Chinese cities as well as the temporal change of contamination at a selected city (Jinan, Shandong Province). The results revealed ubiquitous distributions of several groups of NPPs in the ambient environment, such as oleates, adipates, citrates, and isobutyrates. The total abundance of NPPs (ΣNPPs) ranged from 0.37 to 54.7 ng/m3, and the ratios of ΣNPPs to ΣPAEs ranged from 0.06 to 4.17 across the study sites. The spatial variations in ΣNPPs appeared to be significantly associated with the gross domestic product of the cities, indicating a link between economic prosperity and environmental releases of NPPs. The ratios of ΣNPPs to ΣPAEs also exhibited a significant temporal increase during the period of 2015–2020 in the study site located in Jinan, providing strong evidence of the increasing applications of NPPs relative to PAEs in previous years. Our work constitutes one of the first reports on the spatiotemporal distributions of NPPs over a large geographic range.

Emerging Plasticizers in South China House Dust and Hand Wipes: Calling for Potential Concern?

Following regulations on legacy plasticizers, a large variety of industrial chemicals have been employed as substitutes to manufacture consumer products. However, knowledge remains limited on their environmental distributions, fate, and human exposure risks. In the present work, we screened for a total of 34 emerging plasticizers in house dust from South China and matched hand wipes collected from volunteers (n = 49 pairs). The results revealed a frequent detection of 27 emerging plasticizers in house dust, with the total concentrations reaching a median level of 106 700 ng/g. Thirteen of them had never been investigated by any environmental studies prior to our work, which included glycerol monooleate (median: 61 600 ng/g), methyl oleate (16 400 ng/g), butyl oleate (411 ng/g), 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate (341 ng/g), 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol diisobutyrate (105 ng/g), isopropyl myristate (154 ng/g), di(2-ethylhexyl) sebacate (69.1 ng/g), triisononyl trimellitate (64.4 ng/g), as well as a few others. Emerging plasticizers were also frequently detected in hand wipes, with a median total level of 4680 ng, indicating potential exposure via hand-to-mouth contact. Several chemicals, including acetyl tributyl citrate, tributyl citrate, di-n-butyl maleate, isopropyl myristate, and isopropyl palmitate, exhibited significant correlations between dust and hand wipe. However, other plasticizers did not follow this pattern, and the chemical compositional profiles differed between dust and hand wipe, suggesting chemical-specific sources and exposure pathways. Although the estimation of daily intake (EDI) indicated no substantial risks through dust ingestion or hand-to-mouth transfer of emerging plasticizers, continuous monitoring is needed to explore whether some of the important plasticizers are safe replacements or regrettable substitutions of the legacy ones.

The study aimed to analyze changes in water quality based on ten physicochemical parameters for the Danube River in Bačka. Data from three profiles over a twenty-year interval were used and processed using multivariate statistics. An ANOVA indicated that the quality of surface water is mostly at a satisfactory level. Sufficient amounts of dissolved oxygen indicate a favorable aeration regime. The surpassing of the annual and monthly values of suspended solids was recorded for all profiles (especially in summer). The summary results show that most parameters, except for suspended solids, are within the allowed values for water quality Class II. A Pearson’s correlation test indicates a moderate to weak correlation of the analyzed parameters. A PCA analysis determined the influence of (a) eutrophication processes; (b) ecological factors; and (c) concentrated sources of pollution. Changes in the Danube’s water quality, primarily increased concentrations of suspended solids, can exert a limiting influence on some economic activities and their planning.
