Risk analysis and the new practitioner

Abstract: This aim of this research is to contribute to an examination of the effects of the transition toward risk analysis on the work of practitioners within the criminal justice system, in particular the probation service of England and Wales. The intention here is to focus on the impact on practice and interventions in the shift from traditional casework methods to risk assessment and some of the contradictions and problems this raises. On the basis of a small pilot study, two issues are highlighted: first, whether… Show more

“…The importance of this relationship for reducing re-offending has been discussed previously (see for example Rex, 1999, Lewis, 2014. If the new probation providers are to perform their role in offender mental health well, staff must demonstrate 'professionalism' -"the ability to understand and build a knowledge of, and rapport with, the offender…to enable a meaningful exchange of information based on trust" (Fitzgibbon, 2007).…”

“…An extensive body of research examines the question of recidivism. Actuarial risk‐assessment tools attempt to predict who will reoffend based on a myriad of dynamic and static factors (Fitzgibbon 2007). Psychologists and criminologists strive to reduce the number of false positives and negatives in their assessments of who poses a further threat (Strydom and Louw 2006).…”
