Riserless Reelwell Drilling Method to Address Many Deepwater Drilling Challenges

Abstract: Drilling a well in deep oceans is a daunting task due to both downhole drilling hazards and excessive floating rig package. Traditionally many of these challenging wells are drilled with a low-pressure 21" marine drilling riser stretched from mudline to surface. A huge rig with high weight, space, and tensioning requirement is vital to handle this monster fluid conduit. Moreover, a reliable station keeping system is essential for the rig to keep it in a very tight operating radius to have drilling operations r… Show more

“…Since the drilling fluid carrying cuttings is returned from the inner pipe of the drill pipe, the drilling fluid can avoid damage to the oil and gas formation. Reel Well drilling technology [5][6] was developed in 2004. Statoil and the Scientific Research Council of Norway carried out theoretical research on the technology, research and testing of supporting equipment, and started field feasibility research on the technology in 2005.…”

“…In field practice, a shallow horizontal trial well was completed onshore in Alberta, Canada with dual-channel drillpipes [15]. Improvements are also expected in offshore drilling performance with dual-channel drillpipes by eliminating the need for the long riser [16][17][18]. Theoretical studies were also performed on the flow behavior and well cleaning efficiency of dual-channel drilling.…”

“…This new type of reverse circulation pressure control drilling technology has great potential and advantages over conventional drilling methods in the accurate control of bottom hole pressure, wellbore cleaning, drilling pressure application, large displacement drilling, ultra-deep well drilling and obstacle drilling. At the same time, because the drilling fluid circulates inside the drill pipe, the working radius and drilling depth of the drilling ship is extremely larger than conventional offshore drilling [1][2][3]. The double-drill horizontal drilling system is a closed-loop circulating flow system.…”
