“…Decreased TrkB levels may be associated with lower BDNF in these animals and a better simulation by the UCMS model. There are numerous studies demonstrating that hippocampal BDNF decreases after CORT and OB model induction (Gourley, Kiraly, Howell, Olausson, & Taylor, ; Lopes et al, ). Though the common hypothesis of depression predicts decreased BDNF expression in depression‐related brain areas, our results showed increased BDNF protein in CORT and OB mice at week 5.…”

“…Evidence suggests that alkamides can readily cross the skin, oral and gut mucosa and that they can traverse the blood brain barrier [5]. In rodent models, the alkamide riparin II has been shown to reduce anxiety [6] and attenuate depression via monoaminergic mechanisms [7]. In a medicinal context, ZA is most likely to be encountered as a component of the traditional Japanese herbal medicine Daikenchuto, which comprises ginger rhizome, ginseng root, rice gluten and Zanthoxylum fruit.…”

“…Repeated corticosterone injections have been widely used to establish the mouse model of depression ( Zhao et al, 2008 ). Following the similar protocol as previously described ( Lopes et al, 2018 ; Chaves et al, 2019 ), corticosterone (Sigma-Aldrich, St Louis, MO, United States) was dissolved with dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO, 0.1%; Sigma-Aldrich) and Tween-80 (0.1%; Sigma-Aldrich) in the sterile phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), followed by the 10-min vortexing and 1-h ultra-sonication (Branson Ultrasonics, Danbury, CT, United States) before injection. Corticosterone at a dose of 20 mg/kg body weight was subcutaneously administered daily for 3 weeks.…”
