Ring-Shaped Leiomyoma of the Ciliary Body

Abstract: Purpose: Ciliary body mesectodermal leiomyoma is a rare, benign smooth muscle tumor that typically presents in women in the second to fourth decade of life. The diagnosis is typically based on clinical color, funduscopic appearance, transillumination properties, and B-scan ultrasonography. Methods: We present a patient with a 360° ciliary body mass with transillumination and ultrasonographic properties consistent with a ring melanoma. Results: This case emphasizes the difficulty in differentiating the benign l… Show more

“…Leiomyomas are rare benign tumours, most commonly found in the uterus and alimentary tract [ 16 ]. On light microscopy analysis, the tumours are typically composed of interlacing bundles of spindle cells with blunt-ended oval nuclei, moderate amounts of eosinophilic fibrils in the cytoplasm, and intracellular myoglial fibrils [ 17 ]. Leiomyomas consistently express SMA, but do not tend to express ALK, S-100, or HMB-45 [ 18 ].…”

Leiomyomas are most consistently reactive to SMA and uniformly negative for staining with ALK, S-100, and HMB-45 [16].…”
