Ring‐opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone and L‐lactide from silica nanoparticles surface

Abstract: Coating of silica nanoparticles by biocompatible and biodegradable polymers of ε‐caprolactone and L‐lactide was performed in situ by ring‐opening polymerization of the cyclic monomers with aluminum, yttrium, and tin alkoxides as catalysts. Hydroxyl groups were introduced on the silica surface by grafting of a prehydrolyzed 3‐glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane to initiate a catalytic polymerization in the presence of metal alkoxides. In this manner, free polymer chains were formed to grafted ones, and the graft d… Show more

“…In addition, they also grafted e-caprolactone and D-lactide from the surface of silica nanoparticles by anionic ring-opening polymerization (AROP). [20] In this study, we widen the scope of our research to graft hydrophilic polymers such as PEO from core PDVB microspheres using AROP. The residual vinyl groups on the surface allow for the direct grafting of EO.…”

“…[8] The present note aims at extending this strategy to ethylene oxide (EO), by using a controlled heterogeneous ROP catalytic process in order to yield hairy poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)/silica nanoparticles. To our knowledge, this is the first example of ''graft-from'' polymerization of EO to date.…”

“…[5,6] 13 C NMR spectra of the obtained products allowed the confirmation that branched polymers were indeed formed. In the 13 C NMR spectra signals coming from linear, branched, and terminal units were well separated (after esterification with (CF 3 CO) 2 O). Determined DB (degree of branching) values were about 0.25.…”
