Rigid endoscopic resection of deep-seated or intraventricular brain tumors

Abstract: Rigid endoscopic resection using a thick sheath (ViewSite) may be a viable method for the resection or biopsy of selected deep-seated brain tumors, such as thalamic gliomas and malignant lymphomas. Neuroendoscopic biopsy is one technique used for the histological verification of suspected brain tumors. There are a number of advantages to using this technique. For example, under direct vision, it is possible to carefully observe the tumor surface and avoid vessels during tumor resections. It is also possible to… Show more

“…In recent years, as the advances of neuroendoscope instruments and neuroendoscope technology, the application of neuroendoscope in ventricular lesions has expanded from biopsy of ventricular tumors to complete resection of ventricular tumors by neuroendoscope. Advantages of neuroendoscope include ( 9 11 ): 1) compared with the microsurgery, neuroendoscope provides a visual field that can be viewed directly and from multiple angles, with good illumination. It can effectively help identify the details of the tumor and the surrounding important tissues, improve the total tumor resection rate, and help avoid nerve function damage.…”

“…The combination of VBAS™ with other technology may also assist in resecting tumors in difficult locations. Akiyama et al used VBAS™ for a series of 16 patients with brain tumors, 2 of which were GBM [18]. A fixed endoscope was utilized for improved lesion visualization and to allow for bimanual resection techniques.…”

“…Glioma is the most common primary brain tumor with an incidence of 310/100 000 [1]. Deep-seated glioma refers to those localized far from the cortex and around the lateral ventricles, arising from thalamus, basal ganglion or corpus callosum [2,3]. These gliomas usually presented obvious symptoms, including hemiplegia, hemi-dysesthesia, even coma [4,5].…”
