Right Ventricular Functions in Subphenotypes of Sickle Cell Disease

Abstract: Objectives Sickle cardiomyopathy is the most important cause of death in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD). Based on recent evidence, SCD can be divided into two subphenotypes, namely, the viscosity vasoocclusion (VVO) subphenotype and the hemolysis endothelial dysfunction (HED) subphenotype. The aim of our series is to study right ventricular (RV) functions in both subphenotypes. Methods Echocardiography including conventional and tissue Doppler imaging as well a… Show more

“…Despite that LDH was not correlated to GLS‐RV, it was positively correlated in the current study to FWLS‐RV. Youssry and Shaltout found a positive correlation between GLS‐RV and LDH in children with SCD, but the FWLS‐RV was not assessed in their study 33 . Despite the fact that GLS‐LV was not correlated to any of the biomarkers in the current study, it was significantly correlated to the frequency of VOCs per year.…”

This could be explained by the effect of recurrent sickling process and ischemic-reperfusion injury, which has been studied previously.…”
