Rietveld Refinement on X-Ray Diffraction Patterns of Bioapatite in Human Fetal Bones

Abstract: Bioapatite, the main constituent of mineralized tissue in mammalian bones, is a calcium-phosphate-based mineral that is similar in structure and composition to hydroxyapatite. In this work, the crystallographic structure of bioapatite in human fetuses was investigated by synchrotron radiation x-ray diffraction (XRD) and microdiffraction ( micro -XRD) techniques. Rietveld refinement analyses of XRD and micro -XRD data allow for quantitative probing of the structural modifications of bioapatite as functions of t… Show more

“…Still, indirect evidences for the in vivo bone mineral maturation are available only. For example, X-ray diffraction patterns of bones from animals of different age show that the reflections become sharper with age increasing (Meneghini et al 2003;Bilezikian et al 2008). This effect is more pronounced in the crystallographic a-axis [(310) reflections] as compared to the caxis [(002) reflections] (Burnell et al 1980;Weiner and Traub 1986).…”

“…In ☐ addition, bone contains about 10 wt% of water. Dietary factors can also affect the mineral composition in bone, which is generally found in the form of a carbonated hydroxyapatite (Posner 1969;Betts et al 1981;Meneghini et al 2003;Rey et al 2009). It is, now, well known that bone mineral can accommodate various amounts of magnesium, sodium, fluorine, and even much heavier ions such as strontium or even uranium (Skinner 2013).…”

“…In terms of structure, bones can be considered as a dispersion of mineral particles (bio-minerals) embedded in an organic matrix, which forms the contiguous phase. Bioapatite [Ca 10 (PO 4 ) 6 (OH)] is considered the major component in the mineralized part of mammalian bone, is a calcium-phosphate biomineral with a structure that closely resembles HAp (Meneghini, 2003). Bone mineral composition depends of several factors such as: age, nutritional condition, diseases and habits.…”

“…Bone mineral composition depends of several factors such as: age, nutritional condition, diseases and habits. These factors make difficult to establish the composition and structure of HAp (Meneghini, 2003). HAp is able to store and release minerals as calcium, phosphorous and several other ions such Na.…”
