The large palaeosinkholes located in the NW of Gozo (central Mediterranean Sea, Malta) offer excellent exposures that provide information on the geometry and kinematics of large karst-related collapse structures. Detailed geological analysis of these peculiar palaeosinkholes indicates that deep-seated evaporite dissolution is the most feasible hypothesis to explain their formation, according to the following evidence. (1) Several structures have been formed by progressive foundering of cylindrical blocks with limited internal deformation as revealed by the synsedimentary subsidence recorded by their Miocene sedimentary fill. This subsidence mechanism is more compatible with interstratal dissolution of evaporites than karstification and cave development in limestone formations. (2) The dimensions and deformation style of the palaeosinkholes are similar to those of other collapse structures related to deep-seated dissolution of salt-bearing evaporites. (3) The arcuate monocline associated with some of these collapse structures is also a characteristic feature of subsidence related to dissolution of evaporites.\ud However, no major evaporite formations have been documented so far in the subsurface of the Malta Platform

“…In the Delaware Basin (New Mexico and Texas), dissolution of Permian evaporites has generated depositional basins more than 150 km long fi lled with Upper Neogene continental sediments that reach around 500 m in thickness (Hill, 1996, and references therein). Monoclinal fl exures in supraevaporitic units atop downdip-migrating dissolution fronts have been documented in numerous regions, including northern England (Cooper, 2002), Canada (Hopkins, 1987;Anderson et al, 1988), and the Paleozoic evaporite basins of the southwest and central sectors of the USA (De Mille et al, 1964;Walters, 1978;Anderson et al, 1994;Neal and Colpitts, 1997). A paleoseismological investigation of fl exural-slip faults related to interstratal evaporite dissolution suggests that such gravitational structures might have the potential to generate earthquakes with damaging magnitude. The Carbondale collapse center, in the southern Rocky Mountains of Colorado, is a morpho-structural depression of ~1200 km 2 where Miocene volcanic rocks are downdropped as much as 1200 m due to interstratal dissolution of halite-bearing evaporites. On the western margin of the collapse center, the debuttressing effect related to active evaporite dissolution drives unfolding of the steeply dipping late Laramide Grand Hogback monocline, accompanied by displacement on bedding-parallel faults. These fl exural-slip faults rupture unconformable Miocene basalts and Quaternary mantled pediments, generating conspicuous half-graben depressions bounded by antislope fault scarps parallel to the underlying strata of the monocline. Two trenches dug across fl exural-slip fault scarps developed in each stratigraphic marker (basalt cap, mantled pediment) revealed unexpected evidence of multiple late Quaternary faulting events (e.g., faulted colluvial wedge, sharp unconformities), with displacement-perevent values of ≥1 m. Three faulting events were inferred from the trench dug in the pediment (<32 ka, 32-28 ka, 5.6-1.5 ka), and four events from the trench sited in the basalts, all probably older than 20 ka. The probable length (~25 km) and downdip width (~7.5 km) of the fl exural-slip faults associated with the Carbondale collapse center suggests that they might have the potential to generate damaging "unfolding earthquakes" with moment magnitude (M w ) around 6.

A reconnaissance of this area revealed a broad depression similar to those at and around Richard Lake (Neal and Colpitts, 1997). Linear tension cracks were noted along joints in Coconino Sandstone, along with buckle folding near the low point in the depression.…”

impoundments for effluent discharge from a nearby pulp mill. Four major drainage events occurred within these playa reservoirs during the past 45 years, collectively losing more than 1.23 x10 7 m 3 (10,000 acre-feet) of water and playa sediment. Drainage occurs through piping into bedrock joints in Triassic Moenkopi Formation (sandstone) in the bottom and along the margins of these playas. Effluent discharge has been discontinued into these playas, although recurring precipitation can fill the basins. Local ranchers have continued to report periodic sinkholes forming when the valley floor flooded. These karst features are among the lesser known geomorphic curiosities in Arizona, but surely one of the most spectacular displays of evaporite karst in the United
