Rice Husk Ash Impregnated with Silver Nanoparticles for Water Purification

Abstract: In this work, silver nanoparticles were incorporated in four different concentrations into rice husk ash (RHA) to promote an antimicrobial effect. The suspension was magnetic stirred and dried at 80°C for 24 h. The samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), specific surface area and zeta potential measurements. Microbiological analyses were conducted test the efficiency of the material in the elimination of the bacteria Escherichia coli. SEM results revealed a homogeneous dispersion of s… Show more

“…When a higher mixed RHA content was added to the composition, the surface area of the geopolymer gradually increased. These results were found to be typically within the range reported . With the increase of RHA from 0 to 60% in the prepared geopolymer, the surface area was enhanced from 19.2 m 2 /g for 100RM0RHA to 29.5 m 2 /g for 40RM60RHA.…”

“…The outer cell wall of the E. Coli is adversely affected the by silver nanoparticles paving the way to eliminate them [41]. A controlled experiment involving water spiked with E. Coli tested against RHA infused with nano silver showed the effective significant reduction in the Coli population at dilute concentrations between 0.5 g•mL -1 to 4 g•mL -1 of nano silver [42]. Copper nanoparticles have also been reported to possess anti-microbial properties again E. Coli [43].…”
