An exhaustive study was conducted to document spider fauna in cashew orchards of the Cashew Research Station, Madakkathara, Kerala, India from January 2015 to July 2017. A total of 63 species of spiders under 52 genera belonging to 14 families were recorded. The most species-rich families were Salticidae and Araneidae representing 33 and 27 per cent, respectively, of the total spider fauna. A guild structure analysis revealed six feeding guilds, viz.: stalkers, orb-web builders, foliage runners, scattered line weavers, ground runners, and ambushers. The occurrence of spiders was at a maximum during the monsoon with 59 species, followed by 26 during winter, 16 species during summer, and eight species being present all-round the year.

Spiders express specific maternal care to their offsprings. The predatory spider Pardosa pseudoannulata mother constructs an eggsac to protect her eggs and juvenile spiderlings. However, here we found that the female spiders ate their eggsacs when ecdysteroid signaling was suppressed. Nuclear receptors (NRs), especially ecdysone receptor (EcR) and ultraspiracle (USP), have attracted extensive attention in arthropods because of their pivotal roles in ecdysteroid signaling cascades. An EcR and two USPs were identified in P. pseudoannulata genome. RNAi against EcR and USP-1 restrained the development of spiderlings, such as delaying moulting and decreasing moulting rate. EcR- and USP-1-silenced adult females produced more invalid eggsacs full of nonviable eggs than the control counterpart, and they ate the invalid eggsacs. EcR and USP-1 responded to the changes of ecdysteroid, and CYP307A1 knockdown led to the similar phenotypes to dsEcR and dsUSP-1 treatments. It proposed that EcR/USP-1-mediated ecdysteroid signaling regulated the development and reproduction in P. pseudoannulata. The period of the first reproduction cycle was 17.87 d in the ecdysteroid signaling-suppressed females, which was 7.19 d shorter than that of the control (25.06 d). The result meant that, when the female spiders detected the nonviable eggs in eggsac, they forwardly ate the invalid eggsac to terminate the useless reproduction cycle and start a new cycle by generating a new eggsac. The strategy can partially compensate for the loss of population growth due to the nonviable eggs, and eating the invalid eggsac also provide a compensation for the physiological consumption during the invalid eggsac care.

Vitellogenin receptor (VgR) is crucial for vitellogenin (Vg) uptake by oocytes. VgR is less known in Arachnida, especially in spiders. Different from only one VgR in an arthropod species, two VgRs, VgR‐1 and VgR‐2, were found in the pond wolf spider, Pardosa pseudoannulata. Both VgRs had the typical domains of the low‐density lipoprotein receptor family except for the absence of the ligand‐binding domain 1 in VgR‐2. Spatiotemporal expression profiles showed that two VgR genes were consistently highly expressed in females and their ovaries, but VgR‐1 was 48‐fold that of VgR‐2 in ovaries. The transcriptional level of VgR‐1 was significantly downregulated by RNAi, but it did not work for VgR‐2 although several trials were performed. Vg‐1 and Vg‐2 might be the ligands of VgR‐1 because their expressions were also decreased in the dsVgR‐1‐treated females. Silencing VgR‐1 prolonged the pre‐oviposition period by 56 h. The expression of VgRs and Vgs were upregulated by juvenile hormones (JHs), which suggested that JHs were the essential factors to vitellogenesis in the spider. The present study revealed the importance of VgR‐1 in the spider oviposition, which will improve the understanding on VgR physiological functions in spiders.
