Rice Cytokinin GATA Transcription Factor1 Regulates Chloroplast Development and Plant Architecture

Abstract: Chloroplast biogenesis has been well documented in higher plants, yet the complex methods used to regulate chloroplast activity under fluctuating environmental conditions are not well understood. In rice (Oryza sativa), the CYTOKININ-RESPONSIVE GATA TRANSCRIPTION FACTOR1 (Cga1) shows increased expression following light, nitrogen, and cytokinin treatments, while darkness and gibberellin reduce expression. Strong overexpression of Cga1 produces dark green, semidwarf plants with reduced tillering, whereas RNA in… Show more

“…In Arabidopsis, cytokinin acting through ARR1 increases SHY/IAA3 expression in root meristems (Peng et al, 2013). Increased expression of CGA1 mediates activation of genes involved in chloroplast development in rice (Hudson et al, 2013). Genes involved in chloroplast development including several genes encoding LHCII show higher expression in buds of wild-type plants by 8 DAP, as would be expected after increased expression of CGA1 (data not shown).…”

“…) and cytokinin GATA Transcription Factor 1 in rice apparently regulates chloroplast development (Hudson et al . ). Finally, supra‐optimal cytokinin levels cause a burst of hydrogen peroxide in chloroplasts that eventually results in cell death (Novák et al .…”

“…Cytokinins stimulate chloroplast development and chlorophyll biosynthesis (Hudson et al, 2013) and increase the rate of photosynthesis (Sakamoto et al, 2006). Several cytokininrelated genes were repressed under both HLB and puffing disorder; they may regulate the common induced responses that altered source-sink communications, and thus, fruit development.…”
