Ribose Found in the Gas Phase

Abstract: Sweet truth: The search for sugars in interstellar space is hampered by a lack of spectroscopic information. D‐Ribose is now the first C5 sugar observed in the gas phase using microwave spectroscopy. The rotational spectrum revealed six conformations of free ribose, adopting preferentially β‐pyranose rings and higher‐energy α‐pyranose forms. No evidence of α‐/β‐furanoses or linear forms was found, unlike biological systems, where β‐furanoses are found in RNA.

“…The low-temperature environment of a supersonic expansion provides the ideal medium for preparing individual conformers of sugars in virtual isolation conditions, ready to be interrogated by a short burst of microwave radiation. To date, rotational investigations of monosaccharides have been carried out for C 4 sugars [222], C 5 sugars [62,223,224], and C 6 sugars [225][226][227]. All factors contributing to stabilization of the observed species are given in the next sections.…”

“…With the initial design [59] and progressive improvements [60, 61 and references therein], relevant biomolecules have been in studied in order to identify and characterize their most stable conformations in the gas phase. This approach has been essentially followed in other laboratories [62]. More recently, laser ablation sources have been incorporated into broad-band CP-FTMW spectrometers [63,64], extending the application of this method to a large number of thermally fragile systems with high melting points.…”

“…Such is the case of the blood groups: having A or B blood group depends on the nature and type of a single sugar unit [4]. Monosaccharides may be found either in linear or cyclic forms [5]. When isolated, they may interconvert (almost freely) between those two forms.…”

“…B5 mJ per pulse). 45 The UV laser vaporization system offered a complementary method to vaporize the sample avoiding decomposition products, identifying the missing O-substituted and D isotopologues. In Hannover and Bilbao, argon or neon at 3-6 bar was used as a carrier gas, creating a supersonic jet that was expanded along the axis of the evacuated Fabry-Perot resonators.…”
