At the beginning of the new millennium, hydrolysis of sodium borohydride (NaBH4) was presented as a promising on‐board technology to generate H2 for light‐duty vehicles. Years later, other B(−N)−H compounds (e.g., lithium borohydride (LiBH4) and ammonia borane (NH3BH3)) emerged as attractive alternatives whereas NaBH4 was struggling with several issues jeopardizing its implementation. Actually, efforts in the research and development of H2 generation by hydrolysis of B(−N)−H compounds have been intensive since the advent of NaBH4 almost 20 years ago. There may be a question with respect to this: What is the technological readiness of the promising hydrolytic B(−N)−H compounds? This Review aims at providing relevant elements in response to this question. In the first part, the most mature B(−N)−H compounds are discussed at length. In the second part, a survey of all other candidates is proposed. It is concluded that NaBH4 is the best hydrolytic B(−N)−H compound for marketing on a broad scale, but there are still key challenges to address.

Rhodium nanoparticles (Rh NPs) were prepared according to a green method based on the reduction of (acetylacetonato)dicarbonylrhodium(I), Rh(acac)(CO)2, in water at 80 °C. The nanoparticles, which were obtained without the addition of a reducing agent, were stabilized by polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) or polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) polymers and characterized by TEM (transmission electron microscopy), XPS (X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy), and XRD (X‐ray powder diffraction) methods. The excellent catalytic activity of these Rh NPs was evidenced in the hydrogenation of benzene to cyclohexane. In the presence of PPh3, Rh NPs formed a highly active system in the hydroformylation of 1‐hexene. In this system, they acted as a source of soluble rhodium species. Rh NPs were also synthesized in water using rhodium(II) acetate, Rh2(OAc)4, and rhodium(III) chloride, RhCl3, as rhodium sources, and their catalytic activity was compared with that of the rhodium precursors.

Pd(0) nanoparticles (NPs) decorated on graphene nanosheets (GNS), Pd/GNS, have been synthesized by classical wet‐chemical method and reduced by using sodium borohydride. The definition of the Pd/GNS nanocatalyst by the combination methods reveals that the formation of well‐dispersed highly crystalline 3.68 ± 0.35 nm Pd(0) NPs on the surface of GNS. The Pd/GNS nanocatalyst was tested as a catalyst in the hydrogen production reaction via methanolysis of ammonia‐borane. Compared with the heterogeneous catalyst systems used for this reaction up to now in the literature, it has been understood that this is one of the best catalysts in terms of high efficiency (TOF=101.5 mol H2 mol catalyst−1 min−1, 253.75 min−1 corrected for the surface atoms), low activation energy (46 kJ mol−1) and total conversion (>99%) at room conditions. The more important is the remarkable stability of Pd/GNS against to agglomeration make Pd/GNS recyclable catalyst for the methanolysis of AB. Pd/GNS nanocatalyst retains 74.6% of its initial activity with 95.8% of conversion even at 5th recycle in the methanolysis of AB. Finally, the methanolysis reaction was carried out at various temperatures with different catalyst and substrate concentrations to write the rate equation and determine other activation parameters (ΔH# and ΔS#).
