Rhizospheric Plant–Microbe Interactions: miRNAs as a Key Mediator

Abstract: The importance of microorganisms in plant development, nutrition and stress resistance is consensus and has led to a more holistic approach of plant-microbe interactions, under the holobiont concept. The structure of plant microbiota is often described as hostdriven, especially in the rhizosphere, where microbial communities are shaped by diverse rhizodeposits. Gradually, this anthropogenic vision is fading and being replaced by the idea that plants and microorganisms co-shape the plant microbiota. Through coe… Show more

“…1B). Lastly, blocking the expression of phytopathogens virulence factors using RNA has been proven efficient for plants (Middleton et al ., 2020). Plants can use small (interference) RNA molecules to block the translation of virulence factors using EVs (Middleton et al ., 2020).…”

Plants can use small (interference) RNA molecules to block the translation of virulence factors using EVs (Middleton et al ., 2020). This EV‐based strategy could be adopted by biotechnologically improved BCAs to efficiently deliver silencing miRNAs into phytopathogen (Fig.…”

“…In plants with shallow roots, the rhizosphere communities are specific to individual species or even cultivars (Berendsen, Pieterse and Bakker 2012; Bulgarelli et al 2013). This specificity might depend on differences in exudate compositions (Sasse, Martinoia and Northen 2018), although this has been argued to be too simple (Middleton et al 2021). Furthermore, vertical transmission from the seeds have been suggested to be involved in shaping the microbiome of seedlings, even though the main effect is expected at the phyllosphere (Shade, Jacques and Barret 2017).…”

“…The composition of root exudates provided to the microbiome in the rhizosphere is determined by plant species (Badri and Vivanco, 2009 ; Eisenhauer et al, 2016 ) and can differ among genotypes of the same plant species (Micallef et al, 2009 ). The plant and its closely associated microbiota communicate through different channels and together modulate the structure of the microbiome in the rhizosphere (Venturi and Keel, 2016 ; Sasse et al, 2018 ; Middleton et al, 2021 ).…”
