Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) in the vicinity of transformers soils at main campus of university of Port Harcourt, Choba, Nigeria was monitored. Evaluation was done for both total PCBs (Aroclor) and congener’s form using Gas Chromatography at four designated sites; A, B, C, and D with geographical co-ordinates for site A-Donald Ekong Library, latitude 4°54’, 32’’N and longitude 6°55:05’’E, site B-Senate building with latitude 4°54’14’’N and longitude 6°55’, 23’’N, site C-Transformer close to music department with latitude 4°54’, 01’’N and longitude 6°55; 56’’E and finally site D-Gana-Ma Lecturers residential quarters with latitude 4°54’.23’’ N and longitude 6°55’, 74’’E. All the sites are polluted with PCBs that exceeds the maximum limit of 2.0 mg/kg as per United States Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). The order of total PCBs was site D site > site A > site B > site C, which also corresponds with the order of sites carcinogenicity of dioxin-like PCBs, calculated as Total toxicity Equivalence concentration (TTEC). The TTEC for site A, B, C and D corresponds to 0.000012, 0.000035, 0.0000185 and 0.00039 (mg/kg), respectively, which exceeded the method B clean up levels for 2, 3, 7, 8-tetrachloro dibenzo-p-dioxin levels of 1.3×10-5 mg/kg and need of massive cleanup for carcinogenic dioxin-like PCBs. We also found out there is high loadings of PCBs congeners with little or no biodegradability across the four sites. To mitigate the known human health risks posed by PCBs toxicity, non-PCBs transformers should be replaced with current ones and extensive soil remediation is needed to clean up the PCBs to avoid negative impact.

The microbiota associated to xerophyte is a “black box” that might include microbes involved in plant adaptation to the extreme conditions that characterize their habitat, like water shortage. In this work, we studied the bacterial communities inhabiting the root system of Argania spinosa L. Skeels, a tree of high economic value and ecological relevance in Northern Africa. Illumina 16S rRNA gene sequencing and cultivation techniques were applied to unravel the bacterial microbiota’s structure in environmental niches associated to argan plants (i.e., root endosphere, rhizosphere, root-surrounding soil), not associated to the plant (i.e., bulk soil), and indirectly influenced by the plant being partially composed by its leafy residue and the associated microbes (i.e., residuesphere). Illumina dataset indicated that the root system portions of A. spinosa hosted different bacterial communities according to their degree of association with the plant, enriching for taxa typical of the plant microbiome. Similar alpha- and beta-diversity trends were observed for the total microbiota and its cultivable fraction, which included 371 isolates. In particular, the residuesphere was the niche with the highest bacterial diversity. The Plant Growth Promotion (PGP) potential of 219 isolates was investigated in vitro, assessing several traits related to biofertilization and biocontrol, besides the production of exopolysaccharides. Most of the multivalent isolates showing the higher PGP score were identified in the residuesphere, suggesting it as a habitat that favor their proliferation. We hypothesized that these bacteria can contribute, in partnership with the argan root system, to the litter effect played by this tree in its native arid lands.

Biogeosciences and Forestry Biogeosciences and Forestry A review of the performance of woody and herbaceous ornamental plants for phytoremediation in urban areas Maurizio Capuana Urban and periurban areas are often contaminated by several pollutants. Phytoremediation is considered to be an effective and eco-friendly strategy for the restoration of these contaminated lands. For this purpose, the exploitation of ornamental plants could be an additional option, due to their positive impact on the landscape. In this paper, we reviewed a selection of species which have been proposed for utilization in phytoremediation. Several tree species have been introduced in the past into urban environments for parks, gardens and avenues, with a selection studied for their capacity to absorb, tolerate, and translocate contaminants. Shrubby and herbaceous species are also commonly exploited for their ornamental features and are now studied for phytoremediation purposes. The responses of several effective species to the presence of heavy metals or dangerous organic compounds in the growth substrate are examined in this paper.
