“…The earlier installed transformers showed higher concentration of PCBs than the later installed ones. It is quite remarkable that this research findings in Choba, Port Harcourt clearly contrast earlier works of Eromosele and Iwuoha (2016) in Rumuagholu's area of Port Harcourt metro-polis, where PCBs (Aroclor) toxicity in the soil around transformer areas were not established and therefore in no need of remediation in area under evaluation using relevant approaches (Gomes et al, 2015;Huang et al, 2018;Li et al, 2018;Needham and Ghosh, 2019;Terzaghi et al, 2018;Terzaghi et al, 2019;Viisimaa et al, 2013;.…”

“…This result contrasts the general knowledge on the rhizosphere enrichment effect on the microbial community that leads to a higher density of bacteria in plant-associated soil fractions fueled by carbon substrates released by roots [ 71 ]. Our relatively small set of data did not allow us to elaborate a convincing explanation to justify the observed deviation from an effect that has been described independently from the plant species and also in ecosystems subjected to different stress types like pollution [ 32 ] and xeric conditions [ 72 ]. Given the scarcity of data on bacterial abundance associated to the root system of xerophytes, we can hypothesize that tree species such as A. spinosa present a rhizodeposition profile able to select a peculiar microbiota from the bulk soil but not sufficient to sustain the quantitative enrichment conventionally observed in the rhizosphere niche.…”

“…qPCR reactions were performed on metagenomic DNA in polypropylene 96-well plates using a BIORAD CFX Connect™ Real-Time PCR Detection System by the amplification of 16SrRNA universal bacterial gene using primers 357F (5’-CCCTACGGGAGGCAGCAG-3′) and 907R (5’-CCGTCAATTCCTTTGAGTTT-3′) [ 32 ] with the following conditions: 0.3 μM of each primer, 7.5 μl SsoAdvanced™Universal SYBR®Green Supermix (BIORAD), 1 μl DNA template, 15 μl final volume. PCR thermal conditions were 3 min at 98 °C, followed by 35 cycles of 98 °C for 1 min, 30 s at 58 °C, and 72 °C for 1 min.…”

“…Concerning polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), Terzaghi et al (2019) demonstrated that Festuca arundinacea cultivated by adding compost or in consociation with Cucurbita pepo ssp. pepo and Medicago sativa cultivated with Rhizobium spp.…”
