Throughout the COVID‐19 pandemic, rhinovirus (RV) remained notable persistence, maintaining its presence while other seasonal respiratory viruses were largely suppressed by pandemic restrictions during national lockdowns. This research explores the epidemiological dynamics of RV infections among pediatric populations on Hainan Island, China, specifically focusing on the impact before and after the zero‐COVID policy was lifted. From January 2021 to December 2023, 19 680 samples were collected from pediatric patients hospitalized with acute lower respiratory tract infections (ARTIs) at the Hainan Maternal and Child Health Hospital. The infection of RV was detected by tNGS. RV species and subtypes were identified in 32 RV‐positive samples representing diverse time points by analyzing the VP4/VP2 partial regions. Among the 19 680 pediatric inpatients with ARTIs analyzed, 21.55% were found to be positive for RV infection, with notable peaks observed in April 2021 and November 2022. A gradual annual decline in RV infections was observed, alongside a seasonal pattern of higher prevalence during the colder months. The highest proportion of RV infections was observed in the 0–1‐year age group. Phylogenetic analysis on 32 samples indicated a trend from RV‐A to RV‐C in 2022. This observation suggests potential evolving dynamics within the RV species although further studies are needed due to the limited sample size. The research emphasizes the necessity for ongoing surveillance and targeted management, particularly for populations highly susceptible to severe illnesses caused by RV infections.

Moringa oleifera (M. oleifera) is a plant widely used for its beneficial properties both in medical and non-medical fields. Because they produce bioactive metabolites, plants are a major resource for drug discovery. In this study, two different cultivars of leaves of M. oleifera (Salento and Barletta) were obtained by maceration or microwave-assisted extraction (MAE). We demonstrated that extracts obtained by MAE exhibited a lower cytotoxic profile compared to those obtained by maceration at concentrations ranged from 25 to 400 µg/mL, on both Vero CCL-81 and Vero/SLAM cells. We examined their antiviral properties against two viruses, i.e., the human coronavirus 229E (HCoV-229E) and measles virus (MeV), which are both responsible for respiratory infections. The extracts were able to inhibit the infection of both viruses and strongly prevented their attack and entry into the cells in a range of concentrations from 50 to 12 µg/mL. Particularly active was the variety of Salento that registered a 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) at 21 µg/mL for HCoV-229E and at 6 µg/mL for MeV. We identified the presence of several compounds through high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC); in particular, chlorogenic and neochlorogenic acids, quercetin 3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (QGP), and glucomoringin (GM) were mainly observed. In the end, M. oleifera can be considered a promising candidate for combating viral infections with a very strong action in the early stages of viral life cycle, probably by destructuring the viral particles blocking the virus–cell fusion.
Background and objectiveHuman rhinovirus (HRV) is one of the leading causes of pediatric respiratory tract infection with a prevalence rate of 30-50%, mostly affecting children below five years of age and causing a substantial amount of economic loss. In children, it can alone or as a co-infection, cause a wide range of symptoms from mild to life-threatening ones. With the above background, the current study was carried out to emphasize the role of HRV mono-infection in pediatric acute respiratory tract infections by correlating clinical and molecular laboratory findings. MethodsThis study was carried out in a tertiary care teaching hospital over a duration of four years (March 2019-October 2023). Children up to 14 years of age visiting the outpatient department or admitted to the ward with diagnoses of acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs) were included. The clinical and laboratory data were retrieved and analyzed. A nasopharyngeal swab (NPS) or throat swab (TS) was collected and sent to the Microbiology laboratory maintaining the cold chain. Nucleic acid was extracted and subjected to multiplex real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). ResultOf the 245 samples tested for the respiratory viral pathogen, 52 samples tested positive for HRV, of which 27 had HRV mono-infection. The clinico-demographic details of these 27 patients were studied in detail. The majority of the cases (24/27; 88.8%) were less than five years of age. Fever and shortness of breath were the most consistent symptoms in all. Nineteen (19/27; 62.9%) HRV mono-infection cases had underlying comorbidities, all requiring respiratory support. The HRV mono-infection cases either developed bronchiolitis, lower respiratory tract infection, or pneumonia. All mono-infection cases had cycle threshold value (Ct) < 25, while the Ct value of HRV was > 30 in co-infection with other viruses. ConclusionMono-infection of HRV in under-five children with underlying comorbidities and a lesser Ct value indicates severe disease manifestation and should be dealt with more cautiously.
