Rhinologic Computed Tomographic Evaluation in Patients With Cleft Lip and Palate

Abstract: The occurrence of maxillary sinusitis associated with cleft lip and palate is dependent on both the cleft side and the deviated nasal septum, but not on the size of the sinus. The cleft side is responsible for the direction of the septal deviation and the height of the floor of the maxillary sinus. A low-situated sinus floor may be in contact with the root of the teeth, and thus may be one of the etiologic factors of sinusitis in patients with clefts.

“…In patients with UCLP, middle ear and mastoid problems, dental anomalies, and maxillary sinus volume shortage are observed frequently (17,18). Recently, investigations into nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses in CLP patients had increased, because rhinosinusitis was commonly observed in these patients (19). The treatment of these patients is jointly performed by several disciplines such as: otorhinolaryngology, prosthetic dentistry, oral and maxillofacial or plastic surgery, and orthodontics.…”

“…In the convex side, a lateral shift of the middle turbinate narrows the middle meatus and sinus ostium. On the other hand, concha bullosa tends to occur in the concave side, so the sinus ostium is also narrowed (Suzuki et al 1999). Interestingly, rhinosinusitis was more common in the concave side than in the convex side in patients with cleft palate (Suzuki et al 1999).…”

“…Otros estudios antropométricos como los de Farkas (10), presentan dificultades técnicas por la complejidad de sus mediciones y la falta de reproductibilidad de resultados en ausencia de estudios imagenológicos complejos (11)(12)(13)(14). Esta investigación destaca el uso de herramientas fotogramétricas y clínicas sencillas para el análisis de la simetría en pacientes con labio y paladar hendido unilateral.…”
