“…7,14 In 1981, at King Faisal Hospital, Riyadh (the apex referral hospital for Saudi Arabia), 25 of 58 (43%) patients of all ages who underwent surgery for tight mitral stenosis were aged 20 years or less. 16 If the King Faisal Hospital gure in 1981 was a reasonable re ection of the situation in KSA at the time, the drop in the incidence of critical mitral stenosis in patients below 20 years of age from 43% in 1981 to 14% in the year 2000 (in this series) might suggest a slowing-down of the rate of progression of mitral stenosis in this country. In keeping with this conclusion, ve of seven cases with premature and critical mitral stenosis were seen between 1984 and 1990 and only two cases between 1991 and 1996.…”

“…In Arab and Asian countries, rheumatic heart disease progresses rapidly, often requiring surgical intervention before patients are 20 years [7][8][9][10]. Few studies of rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease have been conducted in Saudi Arabia, although the importance of rheumatic heart disease has been noted [11][12][13]. This study represents a preliminary attempt to determine the prevalence of rheumatic heart disease and to describe the epidemiological features as seen in AlMedina schoolchildren.…”
