Rheotanytarsus Thienemann et Bause (Diptera: Chironomidae) from Central America and Mexico

Abstract: Eleven new species of Rheotanytarsus Thienemann et Bause from Central America and Mexico are described: R. baculus sp. n., R. calacmulensis sp. n., R. foliatus sp. n., R. guanacastensis sp. n., R. hanseni sp. n., R. kusii sp. n., R. nuamae sp. n., R. scutulatus sp. n., R. subtilis sp. n., and R. thunesi sp. n. as males only and R. ramirezae sp. n. as male and pupae. Two species are redescribed: R. exiguus (Johannsen) as male, pupae and larvae; and R. meridionalis (Johannsen) as male only. Keys to males and kno… Show more

“…A genus with ~ 100 species distributed in all zoogeographic regions except Antarctica. The Central American and Mexican species were reviewed by Kyerematen and Andersen (2002) ; the Rheotanytarsus pellucidus group was revised by Kyerematen et al (2000) . Larvae are rheobiontic, occurring in streams, large rivers, and the littoral of lakes where wave action simulates the action of flowing water ( Epler et al 2013 ).…”

“…hoffeinsorum combines some species-specific characters (the median vol-sella with bone-like stem bearing leaf-shaped separated lamellae) with those typical of extant species, and thus perceived as constant within the genus (the hypopygial anal tergite with the round field bearing median setae, the stout anal point with swollen apex, and the posteriorly directed superior volsella) ( Figure 3). Essential information on the systematics, zoogeography and phylogeny of the genus have been published based on extant representatives distributed worldwide Andersen and Kyerematen, 2001;Kyerematen and Andersen, 2001;Saether and Kyerematen, 2001).…”

“…Containing more than 100 described species, the worldwide Rheotanytarsus Thienemann & Bause, 1913 (Diptera: Chironomidae), is one of the most species‐rich genera of the tribe Tanytarsini in the subfamily Chironominae (Hazra et al, 2016; Kyerematen & Andersen, 2002; Kyerematen et al, 2000; Liu et al, 2022). Larvae of Rheotanytarsus are rheobiontic and usually found in large rivers, streams, and brooks, but also in the littoral of lakes (Epler et al, 2013).…”
