Rheology in Pharmaceutical Formulations-A Perspective

Abstract: Medications produced as semi-solids type product such as creams, ointments and lotions are based on emulsion or suspension type systems consisting of two or more incompatible materials. In order to be manufactured, these dosage forms need specific flow properties so they can be placed into a container, remain stable over time, dispensed, handled and properly applied to the affected area by patients. Rheology is therefore crucially important as it will directly affect the way a drug is formulated and developed,… Show more

“…The revelation of this study and related study from Khaled & Abdelbaki, (2012) affirm that Na-CMC has high affinity for calcium ions, meaning also that it may not be a good suspending agent for formulations containing calcium. It has also been reported (Sultana et al, 2012;Mastropietro et al, 2013) that carboxyl groups of carboxyl-substituted methyl cellulose are particularly sensitive to calcium, aluminium and iron ions. According to the researchers, the complexation of the carboxyl group and calcium ions caused a reduction in medium viscosity, and thus high sedimentation rate.…”

“…The rheological behavior of hydrophilic formulations, e.g., lubricants, used in pharmaceutical formulations is crucially important since it will directly affect the pathway of formulation development, the quality of raw and finished product, the components efficiency, the patient's compliance, and the overall healthcare costs (Mastropietro et al 2013). In this work, the developed lubricant formulation was mainly composed by HEC and glycerol to confer the gelling/thickening and lubricating properties required.…”

“….By direct mixing, various degrees of particle concentration were created in the reaction vessel. High particle concentration promotes particle-particle interactions and results in hindered sedimentation (Punnamaraju, 2012;Mastropietro et al, 2013); thus lower sedimentation rate. High temperature also enhances particle-medium interactions (Gary, 2004), which increased the tendency for the particles to remain stabilized at the initial precipitation stages.…”
