Rheological Properties of Aqueous Acid Solutions of Chitosan: Experiment and Calculations of the Viscometric Functions on the Basis of a Mesoscopic Model

Abstract: The rheological properties of chitosan solutions in acetic acid at 20 o C in the range of polymer concentrations from 0.5 to 8 mass% and acid concentrations from 2 to 70% have been investigated. With the use of a modifi ed Vinogradov-Pokrovskii model based on the microstructural approach to the description of polymer fl uid dynamics, numerical solutions of gradient dependences of viscometric functions of aqueous acid solutions of chitosan have been obtained. It has been established that the numerical solution … Show more

“…The chitosan molecules, depending on the solvent system, may adopt different spatial arrangements and interact with several anionic species; their behavior in solution depends on the molar mass and degree of deacetylation, as well as on the pH of the medium (Babak et al 2007;Lee et al 2013;Shipovskaya et al 2016).…”

“…However, in photo-initiated reactions, the interaction scheme is complex, and the polymer concentration must be low for radiation to penetrate. The transition from the regime of diluted solutions to the moderately concentrated ones can be established more reliably using the modified Vinogradov-Pokrovskii method [18]. However, to achieve the goals of this work, it is sufficient to establish an approximate range of concentrations for the formation of a fluctuation network.…”

“…Viscosity rheograms lg η = f (lg τ) were recorded on a Rheotest RN-4.1 rotational viscometer (Ottendorf-Okrilla, Germany) with a cylinder-cylinder operating unit (internal cylinder H1) in the shear stress range lg τ = 0.1-3.0 [Pa] at 25 • C, the preliminary thermostating time was 30 min. The values of the highest Newtonian viscosity η max of concentrated solutions, which the initial region of the Newtonian flow was not experimentally fixed for (the device immediately set the values of τ which the destruction of supramolecular structures was already in progress at), were estimated using the modified Vinogradov-Pokrovsky rheological model and the MAXIMA program [40].…”
