Cada año se producen millones de toneladas de neumáticos desechados, lo cual presenta un grave problema ambiental. Debido a esto, en la actualidad se está usando el caucho granulado (CR) en el diseño de mezclas asfálticas, ya que proporcionan propiedades fundamentales en ello, como la durabilidad y la resistencia. En la presente recopilación literaria se analizaron diferentes artículos con el objetivo de descifrar los procesos y métodos que se emplean con el uso del CR, identificar los porcentajes óptimos y la mejora que éste proporciona en las mezclas asfálticas. Se halló que los porcentajes óptimos de CR en las mezclas asfálticas varían en un rango de 1%-20% en peso de la mezcla total. Asimismo, utilizar el CR aporta diferentes beneficios a la mezcla tales como: resistencia a la tracción indirecta, a la susceptibilidad, a la humedad, a la formación de surcos, a la permeabilidad y al envejecimiento; aumenta la vida útil de las mezclas a la fatiga y disminuye el ruido. Se revisaron 50 artículos indexados en la base de datos Scopus entre los años 2006 y 2020 sobrenel uso de CR en mezclas asfálticas, daño por humedad, resistencia a laformación de surcos, resistencia a la fatiga y resistencia a baja temperatura.

Waste management has become an issue of increasing concern worldwide. These products are filling landfills and reducing the amount of livable space. Leachate produced from landfills contaminates the surrounding environment. The conventional incineration process releases toxic airborne fumes into the atmosphere. Researchers are working continuously to explore sustainable ways to manage and recycle waste materials. Recycling and reuse are the most efficient methods in waste management. The pavement industry is one promising sector, as different sorts of waste are being recycled into asphalt concrete and bitumen. This paper provides an overview of some promising waste products like high-density polyethylene, marble quarry waste, building demolition waste, ground tire rubber, cooking oil, palm oil fuel ash, coconut, sisal, cellulose and polyester fiber, starch, plastic bottles, waste glass, waste brick, waste ceramic, waste fly ash, and cigarette butts, and their use in asphalt concrete and bitumen. Many experts have investigated these waste materials and tried to find ways to use this waste for asphalt concrete and bitumen. In this paper, the outcomes from some significant research have been analyzed, and the scope for further investigation is discussed.

Asphalt pavement subjected to heavy traffic load and harsh environmental conditions can easily build up damage and shorten the service life. In this paper, different dosages of basalt fiber (BF) were introduced into crumb rubber (CR) modified asphalt binder, and a series of laboratory tests were carried out to evaluate the properties and performances. A dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) was employed to evaluate viscosity and rheological properties. Bending beam rheometer (BBR) test and direct tensile test (DTT) were conducted to test the low temperature property. Cone penetration was designed to test shear strength. Results show that the optimum content of BF is 0.3% by the weight of asphalt binder based on the overall performance evaluation. Viscosity, complex modulus, fatigue property, rutting resistance, and shear strength are improved by introducing BF into asphalt binder. Stiffness and elasticity are also increased. BBR indicates that ductility at low temperature is reduced a little by the presence of BF, but DTT shows that both tensile strength and elongation are improved by BF. Considering that DTT is more performance related, DTT is preferred over BBR to evaluate cracking potentials at low temperatures of asphalt binder modified with CR and BF. Finally, it is revealed through microscale scanning that three mechanisms, absorption of asphalt binder, 3-dimensional fiber network, and bridging effects, contribute to the performance improvement of asphalt binder modified with CR and BF.
