Rheokinetic studies and compressive response of high performance polybenzoxazine syntactic foams

Abstract: Polybenzoxazines are finding increasing usage in demanding applications where high temperature stability is required, especially in the field of aerospace. In this work, thermally stable bisphenol F-based polybenzoxazine [poly(BF-a)] syntactic foams containing varying volume fractions (30-60%) of hollow glass microballoons (HGMs) were prepared and their mechanical response in the quasistatic regime was established. The effect of introducing glass microballoons on the curing profile of benzoxazine resin was stu… Show more

“…Even at higher loading of HGMS, the curing profile is slightly affected, because the addition of ceramic fillers increases the viscosity of the blend, which increases the curing temperature of the thermosets 27 . In addition to this, the polymerization reaction enthalpy ( ΔH ) was gradually decreased on the increase of HGMS concentration; this can be attributed to the reduced amount of monomer in the composition 28 …”

“…Detailed rheological studies on microballoon-polymer resin systems have been discussed elsewhere. 14,15 A representative increases in viscosity of the silicone resin due to introduction of HGMs is presented in Figure 2. It can be seen that the viscosity increases nonlinearly upon addition of microballoons and solventless processing of formulations is practically impossible at microballoon loadings >40%.…”

“…The mechanical properties of syntactic composites can be tailored by varying different parameters such as matrix, microsphere size, wall thickness and volume fraction, among others 7,17–22 . Significant experimental studies have been conducted on enhancing the mechanical properties of syntactic foams by reinforcement with fibers 23–29 and some nanoparticles 30–32 …”
